ADHD Resources

This resource page helps adults in New Zealand understand ADHD assessment, what a screening result can and cannot tell you, and how to prepare if you decide to continue with a psychiatrist-led pathway.

The information here is general guidance, not a diagnosis or personal medical advice. It is designed to make the next step clearer before you begin the Focus Mindworks pre-assessment process.

ADHD assessment in New Zealand

A formal ADHD diagnosis usually requires more than a quick questionnaire. Clinicians need to understand current symptoms, childhood history, functional impact, medical context, mental health history, and whether another explanation could better account for what you are experiencing.

Focus Mindworks uses a structured pathway so you do not have to guess what comes next. The process starts with screening and pre-assessment questionnaires, then moves to clinical review and a psychiatrist consultation where appropriate. Written recommendations and GP communication are included when they are clinically needed.

What the free screener means

The free screener is a short first step. It asks about common adult ADHD symptoms such as difficulty finishing tasks, organising details, remembering obligations, avoiding sustained effort, fidgeting, and feeling driven to keep moving.

A positive screening result does not diagnose ADHD. A negative result does not rule it out completely. The result is best used as a prompt for deciding whether a fuller clinical assessment would be useful.

Preparing for assessment

It helps to gather examples from different parts of life: study, work, home, relationships, time management, emotional regulation, and daily organisation. School reports, previous assessments, medication history, or feedback from someone who knew you well as a child can also help build a clearer picture.

You do not need everything ready before you start. The pre-assessment pathway is designed so you can save your progress, come back later, and ask questions if something is unclear.

If you have a specific question before starting, you can contact the team directly.
